If you're afraid that you could have a quiet and boring party you could make it fun with my tips below.

Every tip might not be appropriate but I should have something for everyone.

It's possible that some people may not want to participate. Perhaps they had a bad day. It's usually a bad idea to try to force people to have fun but hopefully you have others who would want to join in.

Change the music

If nobody is dancing you may want to try changing the music; try putting on songs everyone will love. Perhaps your playlist just doesn't sync with the guests.

Also you could try taking requests. If your party isn't big then people could take turns requesting songs; this might be a good option if all the people at your party like similar music.

If someone is on the music but they suddenly stops songs then this can be a problem. I have heard people complain that their "buzz" was ruined when the music suddenly stops. Solutions could be telling your DJ not to do this, getting a playlist instead or getting someone else to do the music.

You could also try turning the music up if it is too quiet.

Finally ensure your sound system is reliable: nothing kills a party more than the music suddenly dying.

Try getting people to dance

You could start dancing and ask others to join in. You might want to remove items such as chairs from an area so people can dance better.

Play games

Games such as "Never Have I Ever" or "Beer Pong" could be entertaining for people.

You can play games that don't involve drinking too. Some examples are trivia or board games.

Alcohol

If people are reasonably sober you can try a round of shots to engage people.

If you're throwing a rager then a getting a supply of alcohol to share could be a good idea.

Invite more people

If you know of people living close by who can suddenly come to your party then you tell them to come over if you feel that your party needs more people.

Encourage conversation

If you see people not talking to others try introducing them to someone who may get along with them. You could also talk to them yourself.

Jokes

You or another person can tell jokes; people love to laugh.

Singing

You could have a sing-a-long or play a Karaoke type video game.

Talent quest

If you have multiple people at your party with a special talent you can get people to do perform their talents and have a talent quest.

Put a movie on

If you need to change the mood entirely you could put a movie on.

A decent comedy movie will get people laughing.

Countless drinking games for movies exist. You take a drink when something happens. If people are still fairly sober this could be a great option.

Get people off their phones

It may not be much of a party if people are scrolling through Facebook or Instagram. You might want to encourage people to put down their phones and talk to people.

Preparation

You can do some things beforehand to help make your party go off.

If you want to have a rager you probably can't have one if your place is too small or have annoying neighbors who complain about noise. If one of your friends has a better place you may want to ask them if you can host your party at their place.

Invite the right people

If you invite a bunch of strangers things can get awkward. On the other hand it could be good for people to meet others. You could invite groups of people that know each other.

Also consider inviting people with special talents in case they want to entertain the guests.

Just inviting fun people could be a great first step to have a great party!

Have the right items

If you want to play games you may want to get cards, party cups and a 10 foot table.

You may want a TV, gaming console and a Karaoke game if you want people to have a singing session at your party.

If you might watch a movie or TV series you would want a TV in your party area, people probably won't to watch it on your phone!

Get a DJ

Have someone on the music that can get people dancing. One of your friends could do this; they don't have to be a professional DJ; just ensure they're not terrible at it.

Assign people to roles

As well as a DJ you might want a sober attendee or photographer. Some house parties even have their own bartender.

Consider picking a theme

A theme with costumes can make a party more entertaining. An example could be an eighties party; people can come with wigs and dance to eighties music.

Plan activities

If you want some of your guests to participate in a fashion show or talent quest you may want to state it on the invitations.

Costs and clean up

Alcohol can be a cost of a party; you can make your party "Bring Your Own" if you want to lessen the cost of this.

People can break things and this can be an additional cost. Ensure that you have breakables out of the party area to minimize this cost. Also instead of using glassware that breaks you could use plastic cups.

You probably have to clean up after your party. The more people you invite; the more work this will be.

Limiting movement

If you're planning on throwing a rager you may want to limit movement around your place so guests can only go into certain rooms. Door Locks by Amazon can help you do this. Alternatively you could try a door-chain, also at Amazon.

I have also written an separate article on how to have a safe house party.
