Cool House Parties

Can you hold a party in a hotel or AirBnB?

Hotel and AirBnB room doors where a party might be happening

The short answer is probably not however some hosts may allow it if you contact them prior. A party is more likely to be approved if it you make it small and not advertised publicly.

If you have a decent budget you may want to as hotels if they have hospitality suites. Usually the hotel will do the catering. While this may be expensive it could be the safest and easiest option.

If you want to have a party while you're away then it'd be best if you get permission to do so before you book a hotel or AirBnB. Sometimes you don't know what life throws at you but sometimes you can't just have a spontaneous party.

How am I defining a party?

If you play loud music or invite unofficial guests then this would be a party. If someone in your room drinks heavily to the point they create a disturbance or damage property then this could be problematic.

If you have a few quiet drinks with only declared guests then you shouldn't have problems.

Alternatives to hosting a party in an AirBnB or hotel room.

You could choose to have a party at someone else's house or go to a bar.

Many hotels have a bar you have a party in providing it doesn't disturb the others. If it's a low key birthday party you're holding then holding it in a hotel bar could be an option.

If you're young and/or don't need luxury then you could see if backpackers are okay with parties.

A party at someone else's house could be a great idea if you have some duty free alcohol. This may be the cheapest option. You might want to offer to prepare and clean up.

If your space is small you may not even want to throw a party. Single hotel rooms may not be a good place for a party but an apartment might be.

What happens if I throw a house party in an AirBnB without permission?

You may be charged fees and this could equate to hundreds of dollars. Many AirBnBs have noise detection technology which notifies the host if the people in their place are too loud.

Will hotels or AirBnBs blacklist me?

Yes, many will blacklist you so you can't stay with them again.

Refunds and costs

You probably won't get a refund if you get kicked out. The accommodation provider may charge you more for breaking the rules. Also if you get kicked out then finding another place to stay may not be cheap, especially if you had a paty after a popular concert.

Can police get involved?

Yes, some hotels may get police involved and send you to jail. It's generally best to get permission before having a party.

Why don't accommodation providers like parties?

Hotels don't want their room trashed and complaints from other guests.

AirBnB hosts don't like guests making a mess of their place. Things can get damaged at parties. They may also get complaints from neighbours or their landlord.

What if I get permission for a party?

I would suggest that you get stick to the rules so the accommodation provider will be more comfortable approving parties in future.

Stick to the guest list and don't advertise your party publicly. Try not to invite too many people. As I have stated before you may want to let the accommodation provider know how many people are coming.

Don't disturb anybody nearby. Your party may get shut down, even if you have permission.

Don't damage property. You may be charged extra fees if you do.

It's a good idea for your guests to be tidy otherwise you could have problems or extra cleaning fees. While hotels and some AirBnBs have cleaners if the place is trashed it may not be ready in time for the next guest.

Don't let people smoke near your party. They may be able to smoke on the street. Many accommodation providers don't allow smoking in rooms.

Guests shouldn't help themselves to anything the accommodation provider has. This doesn't include the mini-bar if they're willing to pay for it.

Your guests should be respectful to all others in the area. People may complain if they're not respected.

It could be a bad idea to let people hang around outside or in the lobby. You might like to arrange Uber or taxis for them. Many places charge a fee for undecleared guests so don't let people stay overnight.

It's probably a bad idea if the people attending get too drunk. This could cause some of the problems mentioned above.

Inviting only trustworthy people, otherwise the chances of your party ending early will be greater.

Ensure all activities you and your guests do are legal otherwise you'll probably get kicked out quickly.

Some hotels close their accessible entrance after a certain time so let the hotel know if a person needs it open beyond a certain time.

AirBnBs vs hotels: Which one is better for parties?

A party is more likely to be approved if it is at a hotel in a hospitality suite.

Some AirBnB providers may be understanding but many won't. Some people with AirBnBs are regular people and you stay with them but some manage lots of properties and have their own cleaners etc.

Party items

One advantage of throwing a party at home at home instead of an AirBnB or hotel is it would be easier to store items such as:

Disco lights

Disco balls

Speakers

I have an AirBnB, should I allow parties?

Probably not but if your guests stay with you frequently, have proven themselves to be responsible and have agreed to only invite those on the guest list then a party could be okay. You may want them to agree not to post the invite publicly.

AirBnB currently bans some types of parties even if your guests have permission from you. Get familiar with AirBnB's terms otherwise they may be consequences for you.

If you're asked if your property could hold a party and you don't like the idea you could try suggesting a nearby bar or club.
